Students studying

Applied Psychology

Psychologists collect information, answer questions, research, and observe human behavior, cognition, and development. A degree in applied psychology teaches you how to use theories of psychology in real-world situations. Applied psychology majors learn how to use psychological methods and theories in government, education, business, military, and community settings. Curriculum covers developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, research methods, and applications of psychology. Those interested in becoming applied psychologists generally earn a bachelor's degree, which provides a solid foundation for further study. In order to be a successful applied psychologist, students continue their studies at the graduate level, earning either a master's degree or Ph.D. While most courses will take place in a classroom setting, most programs require research in the field. This can include schools, hospitals, or social services offices. Individuals who major in applied psychology can choose from multiple career opportunities. Some work in career development, human resources, organizational development, and human services. Others, particularly those with advanced degree, may seek out research or teaching positions
