Colleges in New York City
Whether you call it New York City, NYC, The Big Apple, The Empire State, or the Five Boroughs, the city of New York in the state of New York is a global city, one of the world’s largest megacities, and the largest and most densely populated in the US. It’s home to more than 120 institutions of higher education, both public, private, for-profit, nonprofit, graduate, and everything in between. As the headquarters for the US financial industry, or Wall Street, as well as the home of NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange, the financial industry plays a large role in NYC’s economics, along with its growing tech and biotech industries.
The state of New York maintains two university systems, the City University of New York system, or CUNY, and the State University of New York system, or SUNY. CUNY is comprised of 25 institutions, including junior colleges, graduate schools, senior colleges, and even an honors college, CUNY William E. Macaulay Honors College, all of which reside in NYC. SUNY is the largest collection of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the US and caters to more than half a million students. There are five located in NYC, including the SUNY Maritime College and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
New York University is the largest in the city, which is also home to big-name institutions such as Columbia University, Fordham University, and campuses for Cornell University. With Broadway passing directly through NY Times Square, the Big Apple features a number of drama schools, including the American Academy for the Dramatic Arts, American Musical and Dramatic Academy, the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, and more. With New York’s Jewish community the largest outside of Israel, several theological seminaries have been established, as well, such as Yeshiva University, which has four campuses in and around NYC that offer a combination of an academic curriculum with study on the Torah.
