What’s your next adventure?

It’s a question I get asked a lot. I’ve been writing about fun things to do in Maine for over 13 years, and I make it my business to know about all coolest ways to be active and get outdoors in Maine. (Lucky for me, there’s no shortage of excellent options – from fly bungee fitness to skiing in a Santa suit. I don’t know who comes up with this stuff, but I love them.)

And because it’s my nature, I can’t help but share every fun, unique, maybe-slightly-weird thing I discover (usually with enthusiasm and good energy and occasional references to tater tots). I want everyone to love and enjoy all there is to do in Maine, just as much as I do.

This here website, Fit Maine, was launched in 2015 as a side project where I could write about the entertaining and memorable stuff I was doing on evenings and weekends. Mostly that stuff included sweat-inducing indoor cycling classes, mountain summits, and that moment in a yoga class when I could finally balance in tree pose without clinging to the studio wall. Since then there’s also been waterfall rappelling, ice climbing, Witches rides, solstice paddles, Toboggan Championships, boxing, trapeze, and cross-country skiing followed by swimming in an outdoor heated pool.

In early 2019, I launched the Fit Maine Social Club, a year-round membership club where we go do fun active stuff TOGETHER. And dang, do we have a grand time in the process.

To me, being fit isn’t just about feats at the gym or stamina on the treadmill. And it definitely has nothing to do with pant size. It’s about being able to do all the cool stuff there is to do around here. Like paddling Casco Bay and making a lunch stop at Fort Gorges. Like doing paddleboard yoga at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth. Like entering the amateur biathlon at Hidden Valley Nature Center or experimenting with skate skiing at Harris Farm.

These are the things that fond weekend memories are made of. It also happens that doing lively, active stuff is an excellent way to exercise (but I don’t call it “exercise.” I call it “doing fun stuff that also happens to be good for my bod”).

So that’s what I write about here: The million-and-one mud runs, boxing classes, hikes, road races, rock gyms, bike treks, aerial yoga classes, ski clinics, full moon hikes, snowshoes, open-water swims, and more that Maine has to offer, so we can all take advantage.

I also have the pleasure of appearing regularly on 207 to talk about fun, active stuff to do around Maine (but of course). And I emcee local events.

So let’s get out there and try new things and make some amazing Maine memories. Maybe we’ll all get totally ripped in the process. We’ll definitely have a hell of a good time trying.
